海洋に生息する数少ない爬虫類「ウミガメ」。
7種のうち5種が世界中の海（主に熱帯・亜熱帯水域）に生息し、残り2種は比較的限られた海域に分布しています。
現在世界に分布しているウミガメは全てIUCNのレッドリスト（絶滅のおそれのある種のレッドリスト）に掲載されています。
